“I seek to create complexity and nuance with the simplest of tools, namely line and colour in grid formation. I begin by exploring the various ways in which a grid of lines can be drawn. I ask, how does material, spacing of line, and order or combination of colours impact what you see? And what happens when you see these differences laid out, side by side, or on top of one another? In asking these questions, my work focuses on the edge, the space that demarcates a shift. What is the smallest amount of difference that can be achieved between two surfaces before the edge between them disappears, I wonder?

I am drawn to delicate materials, such as watercolour paint and coloured pencil, that are receptive to the softest touch, and sit lightly on the surface. Such materials allow me to layer up lines and colour incrementally and slowly. In this slow, attentive approach I find surprising variations that I hadn’t anticipated. For me, painting is a space to investigate the nuances that perhaps get missed in our day-to-day, fast-paced lives.”
